St. Valentine's Day History
February 14th is St. Valentine's Day and is celebrated around the world with flowers, chocolate and perfumes. Red roses are often seen as a traditional symbol of love and passion and have appeared in paintings, poetry and songs for hundreds of years.

The name Valentine is derived from the word ‘valens’ to mean worthy, strong and powerful. St. Valentine was also known as Saint Valentine of Rome and was a widely recognized 3rd-century Roman saint, commemorated in Christianity on February 14th.

Since around the 14th century, St. Valentine’s Day has become a tradition within royalty and nobility in what was known as 'courtly love'. Knights would express their love for their lady by performing services of chivalry with hand written love notes, now seen as the modern day greetings card.
