Birgu gate entrance with flags

Birgu is one of the oldest and most historic places on the Maltese islands, and as well as being one of the most beautiful and underrated cities in Malta, it also just happens to be where we call home.

Birgu streets

This place totally stole our hearts when we first visited Malta a few years ago, so much so that we decided to relocate here from the UK, and after packing up our belongings, our hopes and our dreams, we took the plunge and moved.

Inspired by our new surroundings, our new neighbourhood and culture, we approached our new adventure constructively. With skills and ideas honed over many years, we set about creating what we think is something very special.

With the development of products and designs now evolving, we needed to find premises for a studio and shop for customers to visit. With a lot of help from friends and local professionals, and after many months, we finally secured the perfect place in Birgu.

What was once a storage building beneath the steps at the front of the Church of Saint Lawrence, would soon be the home of Birgu Candlelight Company.

The Collegiate Church of Saint Lawrence
Inaugurated on the feast of St Lawrence on August 10, 1697

Before it began its new life as our studio shop there was so much work to do to convert the old store room and garage. After a year's work of very careful restoration and renovation, we finally opened on 29th July 2021 and we've been going strong ever since.

If you already have an interest in candles, you may well be aware that religion and the church have been synonymous with the making and lighting of candles throughout history, so we think it couldn't be a more appropriate place for us to be based.

If you're ever in Birgu, why not pop in and take a look?

So there you have it, our story so far...
